Botox
WHAT IS BOTOX?
Botox, a trade name for botulinum toxin, has become a household name in the realm of cosmetic procedures. Derived from the bacterium ‘Clostridium botulinum’, this neurotoxin is primarily known for its ability to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles.
HOW BOTOX WORKS?
When injected into specific muscles, Botox temporarily paralyzes these muscles, preventing them from contracting. This relaxation of muscles smooths out wrinkles and fine lines, providing a more youthful appearance. The effects of Botox typically last three to four months, after which the treated muscles regain their ability to contract.
WHAT CAN BOTOX DO FOR ME?
- Forehead Lines: Botox is commonly used to smooth horizontal forehead lines.
- Frown Lines: Vertical lines between the eyebrows, known as glabellar lines or "11s," are effectively treated with Botox.
- Crow’s Feet: Fine lines around the eyes, often caused by smiling or squinting, can be diminished.
- Brow lift: A non-surgical brow lift can be achieved with strategically placed Botox injections. By relaxing specific muscles, the brows are subtly lifted, creating a more alert and youthful appearance.
- Lip Enhancement: Botox can be used to achieve a "lip flip," where injections around the lips relax the muscles, causing the upper lip to roll slightly upward and appear fuller.
- Neck Bands: Horizontal neck lines and vertical bands (platysmal bands) can be softened with Botox, contributing to a smoother neck appearance.
- Gummy Smile: Botox can correct a gummy smile by relaxing the muscles that lift the upper lip too high when smiling, allowing for a more balanced and aesthetically pleasing smile.
- Hyperhidrosis: Botox effectively treats hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) by blocking the nerves that activate sweat glands. It is commonly used for underarm sweating but can also be applied to the hands, feet, and face.
PROCEDURE:
Before the procedure, Dr. Hirra Alavi will clean the area and a topical anesthetic may be applied to minimize discomfort. The Botox solution is prepared, and the appropriate amount is drawn into a syringe with a fine needle. The Botox injections are then administered into the target muscles. The number of injections and their locations depend on the area being treated and the desired outcome. The procedure typically takes 10-30 minutes, depending on the extent of the treatment.
POST-TREATMENT CARE:
After the injections, patients are advised to avoid lying down or massaging the treated area for 3 to 4 hours to prevent the Botox from spreading to unintended areas. Normal activities can usually be resumed immediately, but strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least 24 hours.
